Benali's Boating Journey

Franny Powers Through His Training

Franny was certainly put through his paces when he undertook his RYA Powerboat Level 2 this week! A comprehensive two day course, with a mix of theory in a classroom environment alongside plenty of time out on the water; Franny had ample opportunity to get his sea legs.

On day one he was taken through the basics of tide and weather. Learning about the various resource aids to help in reading weather reports and how they can be used to navigate a vessel safely. Then the fun really began, as he headed out on the Ring 680 model with Instructor, Adam (Mendez Marine) to put theory into practice. Covering off boat handling and ‘rules of the road’.

On day two it was all about navigation – from route planning to how to read a chart, and what the different buoys and channel markers mean, simple stuff but really important! Then out on the water once again to practise man overboard and docking and berthing at a range of different sites. Plus how to anchor off…..’How much rope do you need to anchor?’ being the age-old-question.

“I was little nervous, especially about the classroom exercises” said Franny. “However the pace was great and it was such an exhilarating, fun experience being out on the water. Adam was incredibly knowledgeable and I really came away feeling I had the tools and techniques, along with the confidence to get out on the RIB right away. I’m certainly getting the bug.”
